Several years ago Sharon La Cruise saw a book of photographs of significant African-American women and the one person she didn’t know was Daisy Bates. Piqued with curiosity, Sharon decided to find out and to make a documentary about Daisy Bates.
Because Sharon got funding from ITVS public television, she was pushed to put herself into the documentary and express her point of view. She did so successfully. She gave creditability to the idea shared by many journalists, historians and documentary makers that one can be dispassionately passionate. We see her intense curiosity as she searches through archives and libraries and travels to Arkansas where she’d never been to make DAISY BATES: FIRST LADY OF LITTLE ROCK that is broadcast nationally on PBS this Thursday.
